Portland Review Of Public Enemies

Okay i know you guys will be happy about this review of Public Enemies and i don't know how i missed this one. Anyway a reader of Joblo caught a screening of Public Enemies in Portland and wrote a review. This is a great review and contains some spoilers so beware before reading. You can also visit Joblo.com to view the full article.

I went to see the screening of Public Enemies, on Wednesday night. The new film by Micheal Mann starring Johnny Depp and Christian Bale. The movie is about the "public enemy era" of the 1930's during the great depression, and focuses on the famed gangster / bank robber John Dillinger, played by Depp, and the man sent to capture him Melvin Pervis, played by Bale. The movie also included a vague side story of how the FBI was formed into what it is today.

The film starts off in 1933 with the prison break that Dillinger planned and executed, almost flawlessly. The movie starts with some action and bloodshed which in my opinion is always a good way to get the movie started. We then follow the newly acquired Dillinger gang to a hide away.

At this point, Mann, introduces Pervis, while he is trying to apprehend a famed gangster "pretty boy" Floyd. After Pervis has done his job he is commissioned by J. Edger Hoover to head the man hunt for Dillinger. We also learn of the governments doubts about the FBI and J. Edger Hoover's involvement.

The film continues to follow the chase for Dillinger, and his many exploits that include the famous photograph in which he puts his arm around the prosecuting attorney. His escape from jail with a gun he carved out of a bar of soap. It all ends outside the Biograph Theater (**MAJOR SPOILER ALERT**) where Pervis and his hired help shot and killed Dillinger in the alley next to the theater after this brothel associate gives him up in hopes to avoid deportation.

Micheal Mann has found his perfect blend of drama and action in this picture. As well as he combined his style of handy cam, and set shots. All and all, it was his best film yet. Johnny Depp gets more and more outstanding as an actor every film he makes. Christian Bale, is as he always is... fairly dull. (sorry for any Bale fans out there, I know, Bale was the bomb in Batman yo!... but still) There are tons of cameo's from stars that you'll recognize but can't think of their names off the top of your heads.

I would be surprised if this film doesn't make it's run as a might contender for the best picture of the year in 2009. I would give it a 10/10

Alan Rickman In Wonderland

During a recent interview, Alan Rickman has let slip some more details about Tim Burton’s upcoming film Alice In Wonderland. Rickman will play the Caterpillar, starring alongside Johnny Depp and Helene Bonham Carter. Alan Rickman, who plays the Caterpillar in the film, explains that his face is transplanted onto a completely animated caterpillar.

“I’m a voice, but I have been filmed because it’s my face who will be on the end of something that will be the caterpillar. So it’s the first time that they’ve mixed three disciplines, I suppose — live action, animation, and stop motion. I think I’m part of the animation bit, and I saw Helena [Bonham-Carter] and Crispin Glover yesterday. They’re a mixture of the two, actually, because there’s Helena in a costume and in makeup but her head is going to be made three times bigger than it actually is on top of the costume.”

Disney said that Tim Burton’s adaptation of Alice in Wonderland would be filmed using a hybrid of live-action and performance-capture/computer animation. It also appears that Burton is also employing stop animation as well.

Terry Gilliam Talks About Imaginarium of Doctor Parnasus & Don Quixote

In an Interview with Emirates Business while being honoured with Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2008 Dubai International Film Festival, Terry Gilliam talked about The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus & Don Quixote. He was asked about the film due to be released in 2009 and was quoted as saying:

"Basically the movie is finished, apart from about 600 special effects shots, that are not quite there yet. We're in the final stages of development. Some of the effects have to be reshot because of Heath's passing. He's never computer-generated in the film, but certain other things have to be changed. We had to change the script in certain ways. It was also partly due to the schedules of Johnny [Depp], Colin [Farrell] and Jude [Law] – who were cast after Ledger's death to portray transformations of his character – because they were all involved in other projects and we had to shoot very fast. We literally had Johnny for a day-and-a-half and I had a lot of work to do."
He also stated that he used every inch of film with Heath Ledger and managed to rewrite the script in a couple of days.
"It was a matter of making a decision and going for it. My original thought when we got the news about Heath was to close the movie down. But everybody around me said that would betray Heath and his work so it was suggested we get another actor to do the rest of the film. There is no way one actor can replace Heath, so I got several. Johnny, Colin and Jude all knew Heath and they all loved him. They said they would do whatever was necessary."

He was also asked about The Man Who Killed Don Quixote, which he's been trying to do since 1999.

"The problem is that it has been tied up in legal. We finally managed to unravel it and got the script back and we are now rewriting it because having not seen it for seven years, what we thought was perfect isn't. I think this film has had the most publicity of any film before its release."

The God Code A Review By Johnny Depp?

While searching through some books looking for a christmas present for a friend, I accidentaly came across a book that looked interesting so I went through the reviews to get more insight when i came across the following review Written by
Johnny Depp "jvaldepp" (France):

Fallacy with serious argument, recommend Reading SB 1 or God, February 21, 2004

I do not give book reviews, but this book is both extremely disturbing and debateable. The major weakness of the theory, (and I do say theory as there is no supportive evidense anywhere in this entire read,) is the assignment of numbers to DNA nucleotides derived from original Hebrew dialect. The notion is more than wishful thinking, it borders on fanatical insanity. However the striking point is, even if it were true, there is nothing in it that would bring us added awarenenss other than knowing Gods blueprint is in us, but Genesis claimed that property 1000s of years ago with the statement we were made in Gods Image.

So what is the purpose of this book? I believe Gregg Braden is attempting to make a valuable contribution to World Peace by using the vehicle of Gods imprint on our DNA proving we are all equal and for that, should accept each other as Gods handywork. The book is a beautiful read with wonderful ideas and is quite fun to delve into. However I am quite disgusted at the random, out of the air or off the wall assumption central theme of correlating DNA to Hebrew tongues as there are invaribly billions of more word combinations in Human DNA than there are words of all the languages on the planet, and every other planet in the universe, not to mention that the correlation itself is so preposteriously ridiculous. That is why everyone of the Earths six billion people look different with the exception of twins, oops, a rewrite! I have a suggestion on the fingerprints of God in us, a very real book titled SB 1 or God by Karl Maddox.

I don't know if this is thee Johnny Depp that we all know and love but if it is then it would certanly not come as any surprise being the avid book reader that he is. You can view the review at Amazon Here

Anne Hathaway All Googly Eyed At Johnny

Anne Hathaway who recently described her role in Alice in Wonderland as ‘Cute but psycho, talks about her small part in Tim Burtons Alice In Wonderland and making googly eyes at Johnny Depp all day.

In an artlice on MTV's Movie Blog Anne was quoted as saying “I have a couple scenes with Johnny Depp,” she gushed.
“I wish I could be so cool about it and say like, ‘Oh yeah, it’s just Johnny.’ But I am such a huge fan, I felt really embarressed. He would catch me staring at him and I would have to look up, but we were shooting on green screens so there was nothing to look at. I’d be like ‘Oh look, a bit more green wall. Did you notice that? No? Good.’”
Tim Burton’s “Alice in Wonderland” is currently scheduled to hit theaters March 5, 2010. Anne has also been rumored to play along side Johnny Depp as Victoria Winters in the Upcoming Dark Shadows due to film next year. Not sure how reliable this is so we will just have to wait and see.

Thompson Eccentricities In ‘Gonzo’ Album

Thompson,” released November 18th 2008. She mentions one of the enjoyable aspect of this soundtrack is the excerpts of the documentary wedged between most the tracks. Zanuck V's Cameron On Burton's Alice In 3D

During a presentation at the 3D Entertainment Summit James Cameron was asked about his opinions on other filmmakers, specifically Tim Burton and his work on the upcoming Alice in Wonderland which stars Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter. Cameron openly criticized Burton's decision to convert to 3D after the fact. It "doesn't make any sense to shoot in 2D and convert to 3D," Cameron said.

Producers Richard Zanuck and David Heyman sat down exclusively with IESB while promoting their latest film YES MAN and addressed the recent comments made by AVATAR director James Cameron:

Zanuck: Well, I defy him or anybody else really to tell the difference when they see it visually. And I had as a part of this decision Ken Ralston, who is the majordomo of this whole world is the one who convinced us that it'd be just as effective, he's won 4 Academy Awards, he goes back to Star Wars and Back to the Future and all of those, he convinced us by this series of tests we shot 2D and he made 3D and it looks identical.

Heyman: That's what we do on the Potter films, actually, especially in IMAX, we shoot in 2D and then they make 3D out of it, it's pretty impressive.
Zanuck: Tim had done it recently with Nightmare Before Christmas. Where they rereleased it in the 3D version so he was convinced of that...
Heyman: Cameron is really pushing the 3D thing, he's got a 3D film...

IESB: A very expensive 3D film...but I am sure it's going to be fantastic.

Zanuck: A lot of the crew that is working on this [Alice in Wonderland] has come from their crew [Avatar] even though I think they are still shooting. But, it's very expensive. And he developed a lot of the equipment so that's probably the real reason that he's complaining.

Johnny Self Portrait Featured In Psycologies Magazine

Johnny Depp is featured in The January Issue Of Psycologies Magazine. In a feature titled "Johnny Depp on Fatherhood".

"I could sit there all day and do nothing but watch them grow," he says "I'm totally inspired by them." He also says meeting Venessa gave him "proper perspective and understanding" in his life.

"It wasn't until then that things started to get real for me," he tells the magazine. "We just have a miraculous understanding of each other.
The Golden Globe-winning actor also looked back at his more memorable roles.

"I was a million percent in love with Edward Scissorhands," Depp says of his 1990 film persona. "I remember looking in the mirror on the last day of shooting ... and thinking how sad I was to be saying goodbye to Edward."

But the screen idol and former Sexiest Man Alive says he hates being front and center: "I never wanted to be the guy people looked at. I don't think of myself as being a celebrity, it's too mortifying."

Johnny Depp & 'The Hand Of Dante"

Infinitum Nihil Blog has reported that Johnny's production company, Infinitum Nihil, has bought the screen rights to the modern-day mystery novel, In the Hand of Dante, by Nick Tosches. The book, published in 2002, revolves around the same theme of the afterlife and hell's fiery inferno as The Divine Comedy, with parallel storylines involving Dante in 14th-century Italy as he tries to complete the work, and a contemporary plot involving a fictionalised version of the author, named simply Tosches, who is asked to authenticate what might be Dante's original manuscript.

Johnny is to play Tosches but it is not yet known who will play the part of Dante. In the book, the author casts himself as an Indiana Jones-style protagonist who begins an intrepid journey after a gangster named Louie presents him with a stolen manuscript of Dante's epic. He sets out to authenticate it, an endeavour which leads him on a quest that spans the globe and takes a series of twists and turns, encountering several dead bodies along the way.

In quieter moments, Tosches reflects on the career of the medieval poet and there are "flashbacks" to Dante's life during the time he was gaining inspiration to complete the poem which became his life's work.

I checked out the article printed by Michael Fleming of Variety who also mention that Johnny will star in the Rum Diary however 2009 was the original release date for the Rum Diary with filming to begin 2008 but all we know is that Johnny was scouting locations in Mexico a few months back. As there has been no other news coming out about Johnny currently filming For the Rum Diary he has been seen in LA a few times recently.
