'Public Enemy No. 1' Was Not A Killer

In an article in the Chicago Tribune after an eight-year court battle, the John Dillinger Museum last week started the process of changing all its signs that refer to Dillinger as a murderer or killer. Now they must either add "alleged" to the signs or include a sentence indicating that Dillinger was never convicted of murder.

Jeffrey Scalf of Indiana, who is the great nephew of John Dillinger has spent many years protecting the legacy of his great-uncle whom he has never met and convincing people that, while Dillinger was an outlaw, he was never a killer.

"I don't like going to court," said Scalf, who owns Dillinger LLC, which oversees licensing of the gangster's image. "It's stress that you don't need, but sometimes I have to. If I don't exercise my right, I lose it."

Scalf who was visited by Johnny at his farm last year doesn't expect "Public Enemies" to give a favorable or entirely accurate account of Dillinger and his gang, but he said he takes comfort in something Depp said to him: "I hope I do your family proud."

Isla Fisher Joins Cast of Rango

MTV’s Movies Blog, who had an exclusive interview with Isla Fisher during a junket for her upcoming film, Confessions of a Shopaholic. Isla announced that she would be playing opposite Johnny Depp in the movie as the voice of a Lizard that "Rango" (JD) encounters on his adventure. Fisher also noted that Verbinski is going for a completely original approach to animated filmmaking.

Fisher also talked about the process Verbinski is using to make the animated movie, which includes having the actors actually act out the scenes to aid the animators in portraying movement and expression. That’s not uncommon for animated movies, but Fisher seems to indicate Verbinski’s approach is a bit more elaborate.

Anne Hathaway Talks More Johnny

I think this woman is in love in an article in The National Anne Hathawayy Talks about working with Johnny Depp.

“If Johnny Depp has a twin brother, send him over,” laughs Anne Hathaway. “I’ll marry that guy right away.”

"Honestly, Johnny’s everything you’d want him to be, and more, while Tim is one of my favourite filmmakers. He has been since I started watching his films as a child. Working with him on a fairy tale is like being invited into this sandbox to play around.”

The 26-year-old star of The Devil Wears Prada has just finished working with Depp on the director Tim Burton’s adaptation of Alice in Wonderland, in which she plays the White Queen. Starring in a Tim Burton production – and playing in Burton’s sandbox means journeying into the macabre.

“With Helena Bonham Carter, Tim and Johnny, everyone is so mad, and yet because of the atmosphere, no one thinks that they’re insane,” continues Hathaway.

“You can be totally angry one second and then totally happy another second, and you can be delightful and murderous at the same time. I know that doesn’t make much sense now, but you’ll see the film and understand.”

In Memory of Heath Ledger

Heath Ledger first came to the attention of the public in 1999. His image as a 20 year old heart throb gained him the nick name 'Pretty Boy'. Although he was involved in many roles it was not until his role Brokeback Mountain (2005), finally had what some would call success when he was deservedly nominated for an Oscar and a BAFTA.

Suddenly on January 22, 2008 Heath was found dead in his apartment in Manhattan. In later weeks it was concluded that Heath had died of an accidental overdose of prescription drugs that included painkillers, sleeping pills and anti-anxiety medication.

Amongst all the sadness Heaths legacy will live on through his movies including The Patriot, A Knight's Tale, The Brothers Grimm, Brokeback Mountain, Casanova, The Dark Knight and his last unfinished role in Terry Gilliams Dr Parnassuss due for release in 2009. Johnny Depp, Jude law & Colin Farrell all stepped in to complete Heaths Role as Tony, donating their salaries to his daughter Matilda.

Heath has been nominated for roles in Two Hands, Candy, Ned Kelly, & Brokeback Mountain, and has went on to be nominated and won a Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actor in the most recent film Dark Knight playing The Joker and although he was not here to receive the award we can still celebrate his life and achievements. Thousands of people regularly attend this fun day, and best of all, almost everything is FREE!!!

Little Bit Of History Behind The Capture

75 Years ago The Dillinger Gang travelled to Old Pueblo, Tuscon, Arizona after a series of Bank Robberies. Russell Clark and Charles Makley, along with Clark's girlfriend, were the first to arrive in town. Using fake names, they checked into the 3rd floor of the Congress Hotel. A fire started in the basement of the hotel and spread up the elevator to the third floor forcing evacuation of all the guests. On the urgent request of the gang, and encouraged by a generous tip, two firemen retrieved their heavy luggage. Later, this astute fireman recognized the gang in True Detective Magazine. A stakeout ensued and they were captured at a house on North Second Avenue.

John Dillinger was arrested with girlfriend Billie Frechette at this home at 927 N. Second Ave. in January 1934.

In the space of five hours, without firing a single shot, the police of small town Tucson had done what the combined forces of several states and the FBI had tried so long to do. When captured, Dillinger simply muttered, “Well, I’ll be damned!”

Dillinger was flown to his native Indiana. The others were put on a train bound for Ohio. Dillinger was locked up in the "escape-proof" Lake County jail in Crown Point, Ind. He escaped on March 3, using a fake gun carved out of wood. Less than five months later, he was shot to death by FBI agents as he left a movie theater in Chicago.

Terry Gilliam To Resume Don Quixote

According to Empire Online Terry Gilliam has went from wrapping Doctor Parnassus, straight back into working on a new script for The Man Who Killed Don Quixote. The director began filming Don Quixote in November 2000, but was forced to abandon the shoot after a week when star Jean Rochefort suffered a serious injury.

"Tony and I have started rewriting Don Quixote just this last week, we finally got the script back," he said. "I re-read the greatest script ever written and realise we gotta get rewriting! I really wanna knock that one out in the next month or so."

Gilliam was vaguer on details, saying only that he had “some very different ideas” for the movie, but he has not lost any of his enthusiasm for the lance-wielding Spaniard. “[I’m] starting to think I was lucky, because maybe the film will be better seven years later. It will have matured a bit longer.”

Shooting on The Man Who Killed Don Quixote is likely to begin later this year. Johnny Depp is apparently still attached to star, but the role of Don Quixote, originally played by Rochefort, will be recast.

Johnny Supports Fight Against Pirates

An article posted by the Environmental Justice Foundation has been backed by Johnny who has sent in a letter of support against Pirate Fishing. The letter from Johnny is written as follows:

"Our seas and the people that depend upon them are facing a critical threat.

Pirate fishing operations are plundering fish stocks the world over, which in turn undermine all attempts at their sustainable management, already under pressure from widespread misdirection.

The devastating impact of this illegal form of fishing is felt not only by our marine ecosystems, but also by the millions of people living in some of the world’s poorest countries who rely on healthy fish stocks as an essential source of both food and employment.

Just so you know, this is not a problem without cure, but we have to act now if we are to protect our marine-life’s biodiversity and food security for future generations. It is more important than you, or any of us, can at this moment even begin to understand.

That is why I support the work of the Environmental Justice Foundation to raise awareness and provide ‘real-world’ solutions to the issue. Their efforts to engage in effective action to protect both people and planet will help to bring an end to pirate fishing, once and for all".

Johnny's Visit With Dillingers Nephew

An Interesting article in the Moorsville Times, Jeff Scalf, Great-Nephew of John Dillinger, talks about Johnny Depp and Michael Mann's visit with him during a tour of Mooresville In March last year.

They came with no fanfare and quietly visited the old farmhouse where Dillinger lived as a boy. They did some filming of the house and surrounding countryside. “They went into John’s bedroom and looked at old letters and personal stuff. Johnny Depp tried on an old hat of John’s, and they took tons of pictures of it from different angles,” Scalf said. He added that Mann and Depp were extremely knowledgeable of the historic background, and Depp told him he wanted to play the outlaw as close to his true character as possible — with no horrific embellishments.

Scalf said the main reason he got involved in collecting memorabilia and talking to producers of the upcoming movie was to honor his grandmother by showing Dillinger as a human being who had followed the wrong path and carried a wooden gun — not a murderer as some claimed him to be. Public Enemies First Look From EW

Yesterday we posted some news about ewonline exclusive with Johnny talking about his role as John Dillinger in their next issue due to hit news stands on Friday. Today they have published their first pictures and some info.[Updated]

''Dillinger was one of those guys, like Charlie Chaplin and Evel Knievel, that I was fascinated with at a young age,'' says Depp. ''And because of my grandfather, the character was pretty easy for me to connect to. In a way, this movie was a salute to him.''
Based on a book by Bryan Burrough, Enemies is a cat-and-mouse thriller about the early days of the FBI, and one agent's pursuit of the Depression-era bank robber whose dizzy reign of stickups and near escapes ended in a hail of bullets outside of Chicago's Biograph Theater in 1934. Dillinger lived fast, died young, and left not only a handsome corpse but a legacy as one of the most notorious criminals of the 20th century.

Depp Wearing Dillingers Pants

Mann shot on the actual locations where Dillinger and Purvis made headlines, because, he says,

''when your hand touches the same doorknob Dillinger's did, it starts to talk to you.''

The director even managed to get his hands on a still-preserved suitcase left behind by Dillinger after one of his narrow getaways.

''All of the dress shirts were still folded perfectly,'' says Depp. ''It was a real insight into the guy. Because everything was ready to go at a moment's notice. It was just economical and beautiful.''

Depp even got to wear the pair of pants that Dillinger had on when he was finally caught and riddled with bullets.

''It was amazing,'' he says. ''And—get this—we're the same size!'' Like we said, the man was born to play the part

Johnny Talks About Christian Bale As Purvis

Directed by Michael Mann (Heat, The Insider), and costarring Christian Bale as the dashing federal agent Melvin Purvis, Public Enemies might sound like a blood-soaked chapter of ancient history. But the film's themes couldn't be more timely: Dillinger was sticking up banks at a time when people weren't exactly rooting for the banks. As a result, he became something larger than life—a rock star with a tommy gun.

''Some people might disagree, but I think he was a real-life Robin Hood,'' says Depp, who just finished playing the Mad Hatter in Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland, due 2010. ''I mean, the guy wasn't completely altruistic, but he went out of his way not to kill anybody. He definitely gave a lot of that money away. I love the guy.''

Still hip-deep in the editing stage of the film, which he's readying for its July 2009 release, Mann remains in awe of his two leading men.

"Johnny has courage and immense power. It's all about the spontaneity of the moment for him. Christian works in a totally different way. He becomes the character so totally that he's that person 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The accent, everything.''
