~Dizzy Over Dark Shadows~

With all the hoopla surronding Dark Shadows filming schedule over the past couple of months I think we are all feeling a little dizzy. Sam Sarker who originally let the cat out of the bag saying Warner Bros will announce something soon during an Interview with MTV, but my definition of soon seems very different from Sarker's.

Then there is IMDB who has it posted that filming will start in the fall but according to Nikki Finke of Deadline Daily Dark Shadows had been postponed and would probably not start filming this year. Now we have another source telling us filming will start summer 2009 which is when it was originally slated to film. My Entertainment World has announced it will start filming Summer 2009.

I am not sure how reliable this information is as it could be that they are using old information but I am assuming they would check before posting. You can view the post @ www.myentertainmentworld.com.

~Imaginarium of Terry Gilliams Parnassus~

The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus is the most anticipated film at cannes because it's the one Heath Ledger was working on when he died in January 2008. Gilliam, who co-wrote the script with Charles McKeown, described the film as "my 'Fanny & Alexander,' my 'Amarcord.' I went back to the things I'm really good at."

Ledger's character, Tony, is a hustler of uncertain morality who joins the show, in one of the film's many unsettling references to death, after he is nearly hung. Ledger, who had worked with Gilliam in "The Brothers Grimm," was watching the director explain some storyboards when, "in the middle of this, he slipped me a note that read: 'Can I play Tony?' "

"People don't know how brilliant he was. He was limitless. Anything you threw at him he could handle," Gilliam says of the actor, still not resigned to his death. "When we heard, my first response was that it was a P.R. stunt for his role as the Joker. [His death] didn't make any sense. Even now it doesn't compute."

Gilliam's initial thought at that point was "the film's over, we go home now. But my team, they beat me up, they wouldn't let me give it up. But I didn't think it was right to just get another actor." Because it was three fantasy scenes that remained to be shot, Gilliam decided on three actors, all friends of Heath. Though some rewriting and changes of shooting plans were necessary, it all went surprisingly smoothly.

"Having a magic mirror," the director says, "makes a lot of difference."

The first call Gilliam made was to Depp "because Johnny's a mate, direct and genuine. He loved Heath, and he said, 'I'm in, whatever.' " Then the problem became getting schedules to mesh. "Then Michael Mann's film ('Public Enemy') was delayed a week. I don't think Johnny told Michael he was going. My guess is that he snuck out."

Law, one of Gilliam's early choices for the part, agreed next, and Los Angeles casting agent Margie Simkin suggested Farrell after she saw him at an L.A. memorial service. "All the actors already in the film had to change their schedules, and there wasn't a moment's hesitation," Gilliam explains. "They all said, 'We'll do what's necessary.' It's really a love letter to Heath by everybody involved. He was beloved by so many."

Gilliam likes to joke, if asked what the film is about, that "it's about making marketing people work very hard," and he worries that being smart and entertaining in a dumbed-down world is going against the grain. "People are smart if you get their attention the right way," he says. As one of his characters puts it, "this world is full of enchantment for those with eyes to see." Nothing rewards those eyes as richly as this remarkable film.

Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus will screen tonight at Cannes. You can read the full article @ LA Times You can also View a short clip of Parnassus Here

Sobieski Most Memorable Moment Filming Public Enemies

In an article in OK Magazine LeeLee Sobieski who plays Polly Hamilton opposite Johnny in Public Enemies Comments on her most memorable moment behind the scenes while filming Public Enemies.

I would have to say being on the streets of Chicago totally recreated to be in the time period and the time period dress down to every single detail was really spectacular and fun, but I think watching the way Johnny Depp was so generous to his fans at the end of each day and singing autographs and being focused on his work was really incredible and really impressed me. He did it with such joy and he was so happy. He never acted like he was deserving of his glory, he always acted humble about it. I’ve never seen an attitude that was so healthy and generous and he’s a person that keeps his life so normal with a private life.

Michael Mann Talks Public Enemies & Johnny Depp

Dillinger is a role Johnny Depp was destined to play. Meanwhile, the rat-a-tat
style of Michael Mann seems well suited to a 1930s gangster movie.

Ruthe Stein, San Francisco Chronicle spoke with Michael Mann about "Public Enemies" and the film’s coincidental timeline. When asked about Public Enemies release in a time of economic despair and loathing of banks as much as they did in the depression.

"The timing is an accident," Mann said. "We couldn't have planned it."

Manns instincts told him that he had the right leading man, a feeling confirmed when he talked to Johnny Depp and found out the actor had thought about playing Dillinger for 20 years. Johnny Depp and director Michael Mann circled around John Dillinger for decades. Independently, each imagined the infamous Depression-era bank robber filling the big screen. Good-looking, sexy and charismatic, Dillinger is a role
Depp was destined to play.

"A lot of what goes on inside Johnny Depp could be used and revealed," Mann said. "I know there are dark currents within Johnny and also from his past life, and I know he has a lot of John Dillinger inside of him. He has a deep understanding of a troubled past and a troubled life, but is someone who is a very passionate man. He could understand those currents in unique ways.

"I'm not saying Johnny Depp was troubled," the director clarified, but that the actor "could really empathize" with Dillinger's troubles.

Mann discounts the contention that Public Enemies glorifies Dillinger.

"He was a tough guy who killed people, absolutely, and that's how we show him," he said. "He wasn't a sweetheart. But he was charming as hell, and he knew how to manipulate people."

Will Johnny Depp Do It His Way As Ol’ Blue Eyes

So the rumors have started on the new biopic about Frank Sinatra. Universal today confirmed that Martin Scorsese will be the director. We can all agree that Scorsese will more than likely want Leonardo Dicaprio to play Frank Sinatra, but according to Nikki Finke at Deadline Hollywood, Universal want Johnny Depp to play the lead role.

It was only in February of this year that Graham King says "I’d love to find something for Marty and Johnny to do together.” in an article titled "King of Hollywood: From Cockfosters boy to Hollywood hotshot" It is not known if GK is involved with this particular project but could this be the make or brake collaboration that would bring these two together?

Yesterday it was announced that Universal had reached an agreement with Frank Sinatra Enterprises. Therefore the film will feature Sinatra's own recordings instead of relying on an actor that can sing. Not that it would've been a problem to use an actor that could sing, especially Johnny but it will be interesting to see how this plays out. Only time will tell...so what do you think should Johnny if asked play Ol’ Blue Eyes?

Puerto Rico Through Hunter Thompson's Eyes

In a recent trip to Puerto Rico, one GalleyCat reporter re-read the book and explored vintage footage of the island--retracing Thompson's footsteps in this video essay. Both the novel and film are set around 1959, when Thompson struggled as a reporter at a Puerto Rican newspaper.

Literary Traveler describes the period: "Puerto Rico was like another West, where people dreamt of staking out a piece of paradise and getting rich. Young Hunter S. Thompson tried to get a job at The San Juan Star, but was rejected by the editor, William Kennedy, who went on to become a successful writer and recipient of the Pulitzer Prize for his novel, Ironweed. (Despite rejection, the two remained lifelong friends.) Still desperate to get down to San Juan, Thompson accepted a more dubious position at El Sportivo, a fledgling English weekly about sports."

Alice In Wonderland Revealed

/film has revealed some interesting news about Alice in Wonderland, based on the screenplay by Linda Woolverton: We already knew it was a new adaption of the Lewis Carroll Book but you will be presently surprised I think by what Brian Connelly has to say about the script.

"The big surprise for most people, I think, will be that this is at once an adaptation of and sequel to the Lewis Carroll books. This is thanks to a plot wrangle at least as clever as that in Abrams’ Star Trek. Essentially, Wonderland is both a real place and a recurring dream of Alice’s. In this film she’s dreaming of it at a somewhat later part of her life than in the books, so certain things are different. This is just one clever element of a truly charming and surprising screenplay that I’m now really very sure will become a true humdinger of a movie."

Brian also mentioned that to understand the script you need to look at the glossary of terms. he went on to say that Woolverton prepared one which was circulated to cast and crew. Here is the Glossary of Terms

Rum Diary Continues Filming In Puerto Rico

Filming this week has continued behind closed doors so that is why there is no pictures. Roosevelt Roads Naval Base has been the primary site for filming this past week some gambling scenes were filmed. There has been more cockfighting scenes in Rio Grande. They also did film some scenes at an airport in Ceiba with Depp and Eckhart. Most of the filming was done out of reach from photographers and fans.

For those who are wondering about the Cockfight scenes. This was purely mock fighting as they apparently used harnesses on the animals and a mouth piece covering their beaks to prevent them from opening their mouths and hurting each other.

They will be doing some outdoor scenes nearing the end of filming on Yachts in a Marina in the north east of the island, rumor is they had to design the set for filming these scenes. Not sure if this will be accessible to fans or photographers either.

Most Bankable Star Of The Summer

We already know about Johnny's ability as an actor we also know he has an undeniable talent. He has worn more hats than most stars in Hollywood and yet he has never been truly awarded or recognised.

Now forbes have published what they call the most bankable stars of the summer. Johnny Depp being the top performer according to Hollywood he is the most adept actor appearing in a movie this summer at bringing success to a film, something we could have told them a long time ago.

They say "A history of strong project choices that include franchise mega hits (Pirates of the Caribbean) and cult classics (Edward Scissorhands and What's Eating Gilbert Grape) propelled Depp into a public and industry powerhouse long ago".

We say what about Dead Man, Don Juan Demarco, Ed Woods, Benny & Joon, Donnie Brasco, Man Who Cried, Blow, The Libertine, Finding Neverland and Sweeney Todd to name a few. He may be the star of the season to Hollywood but to us he's always been a star.

Matthew McConaughey As The Lone Ranger?

Yes, the rumor mill is off and running again with who is going to play The Lone Ranger next to Johnny Depp, who will play Tonto. Hollywood Elswhere is the first ones to start off the rumor that Matthew McConaughey is the leading candidate to play The Lone Ranger and here is the story straight from the horses mouth...

A guy who tends to hear reliable things read this morning's Lone Ranger item and said that "per studio desire, the leading candidate for The Lone Ranger is Matthew McConaughey. The initial choice was Christian Bale, but there's worry about his spearheading too many franchises so they're waiting to see how McG's Terminator film does. He's carrying a certain prick status at the moment due to his still reverberating rant."

I can think of better stars to play The Lone Ranger one of course being Robert Downey JR. However, it looks like we are going to hear many rumors until we get the announcement from Jerry himself. Having said that Heath ledger surprised as all with his performance as The Joker In The Dark Knight so never say never.

Glenn Tilbrook Talks Johnny Depp

Squeeze founder Glenn Tilbrook talks about his band and having Johnny Depp and Vanessa Paradis ask to appear on their recent album, Pandemonium Ensues. Before working on the album, Glen Tilbrooks said he had never met Johnny Depp or know he was a fan so when Johnny and Venessa took a trip out to see him he said:

"They're amazingly big stars and very nice, ordinary, lovely people. I can't imagine being someone like Johnny, he's uber-famous, and also someone whose work I've admired for a long time, so to find out he feels the same way about my stuff is very nice.

He also talked about Johnny's guitar skills and what Johnny & Venessa will be doing on the album:

"He's a very good guitarist, but he doesn't play on the album, he narrates the final track Too Close To The Sun," he continues.

"I did suggest that he and Vanessa might like to sing on the record together, but I had this instrumental song that needed narration, so he did that and I did the duet with Vanessa on another song called Interest & Love.

Glenn Tilbrook starts his UK tour on Tuesday May 5. You can checkout the full article and list of tour dates @ www.halesowennews.co.uk
