~Bryan Burrough on Public Enemies~

While researching Public Enemies, contributing editor Bryan Burrough trawled through millions of pages of F.B.I. reports and countless Midwestern newspapers, retracing the steps of John Dillinger and his acolytes. With Michael Mann’s big-screen adaptation of the book (starring V.F. cover boy Johnny Depp!) hitting theaters, Burroughs tells VF Daily how the tommy-gun toters changed the country, and how closely the movie adheres to history.

~Public Enemies UK Premiere~

Johnny, Marion Cotillard, Michael mann & Stephen Graham all attend the UK Premiere of Public Enemies in London's Leicester Square was again greeted by hundreds of screaming fans who chanted his name as he walked the red carpet.

Johnny also paid tribute to Michael Jackson who sadley passed away on Thursday. He stated: "Obviously hearing about the sad passing of Michael Jackson, for all of us, is very very tragic. Some children lost a father, some parents lost a child, some brothers and sisters lost a sibling and that's obviously very sad." He added: “I had great respect for what he's done, his work over the years, he's a real genius.” Johnny, quashed rumours that he is to play Michal Jackson in an upcoming project. Johnny said: “As far as playing him in a movie, it's such an obtuse rumour I never had the pleasure of cultivating,"

~Parnassus UK Release Date Announced~

Imaginarium Of Doctor Parnassus press release shows a UK release date of October 16th. JD plays the first transformation of Heath Ledgers role as he steps through the mirror. Johnny Depp, Jude Law, and Colin Farrell, each serve as alternate-dimension versions of the character. We will upload a copy of the Press Release to loudappeal in the next few days.

~What's Up Next For Johnny Depp~

I have had a few emails asking me what project will Johnny Depp be working on next. The answer to that question is I don't know. So what is on the dance card at the moment for Johnny? Recently he finished filming the Rum Diary in Puerto Rico and some of you may know he is also the producer for this movie but due to Public Enemies his dance card is tied up this month travelling from country to country for Premieres and Interviews for the film. I suspect he will be working with Director Bruce Robinson on Post-Production of The Rum Diary after his publicity stint for PE is completed.

Dark Shadows which is also a production for Infinitum Nihil and Johnny being the producer and also writer along with John Augusts still needs to come together for filming so he probably has a bit of work to do. When will they start filming? well all I can tell you is its all in the hands of Burton and Alice. I did post a month back a post titled Dizzy Over Dark Shadows due to the lack of information coming from Warners Studios and Infinitum Nihil and I mentioned then that all the info we had on Dark Shadows was rather confusing. Here is a screenshot from www.myentertainmentworld.com, showing Dark Shadows filming summer 2009.
However due to Johnny's recent interview stating that they are looking at next year for filming it seems today that we still really do not have a direct start date. What about Pirates and The Lone Ranger? well we know The Lone Ranger is in pre-production and does have a script. With Pirates all we know is that they are working on the script now according to Bruckheimer. Personally I can't see them doing Pirates this year and according to IMDB The Lone Ranger will not start filming till after Pirates.
Lets not forget other productions by Johnny's production company which he is personally involved with although not playing a role he still has a huge amount of work to do and may possibly stick to working on those for the rest of this year. Finally remember he has a family which he probably would like to spend some time with. So i am guessing that Johnny Depp does indeed have a very full dance card and that's without the projects he is attached to and without the involvement of his production company.

~Johnny Depp's Connection To Dillinger~

Johnny talks about his instant connection to Johnny Dillinger today in an article by By Rachel Abramowitz LA Times. Depp says he felt an instant connection to Dillinger, the bold-yet-humble bank robber who lived in old films that Depp watched for hours on his family's black-and-white, rabbit-eared TV.
Growing up in Owensboro, Ky. Johnny got his hands on a relative's Thompson machine gun. "I butted it up against the tree 'cause it tends to ride up on you," says the 46-year-old actor, who relives the moment, complete with shooting sounds. He begins clapping his hand on the top of his imaginary gun. "My pop came in and grabbed it, so it didn't go anywhere." He laughs.

Johnny who prefers not to watch his own movies says "I hope it's good." He's referring to "Public Enemies." He begins to laugh again. "I hear it's good." "I try not to," he says.
"Once you see it, maybe you have to admit it is product or something." He doesn't like the idea of a monetary tag being placed either on himself or the artistic process.
"Having done it, lived it . . . I like the idea of just walking away with the experience." You can read the full article @ LA Times

~Doors Documentary Private Screening At LA Film Festival~

Tom Dicillo reported on his blog that When You’re Strange had finished its two screenings at the LA Film Festival. In addition, a separate screening was held for Johnny Depp and a number of others, including John Densmore. Johnny Depp’s reaction to the film was strong and positive. He appeared deeply moved and expressed gratitude at being asked to contribute.

Jac Holzman solely responsible for signing them and introducing them to the world who was also at the screening wrote a positive review of the documentary in a personal letter to Tom DiCillo.

Tom - I saw the screening over the weekend and was just knocked out. There have been many attempts at a Doors film AND so many abject failures that I had despaired of anyone getting it “right.” And by “right” I meant just letting the band and their music hit a contemporary audience full blast. I have lived with The Doors for 43 years and understand that the sheer power and danger of the group had to come out through their music even more than in live performance footage. You got that just right. In the context of all the music that flowed into the mighty rock ‘n’ roll tributary, The Doors still excite, chill, inform and challenge the listener.
The canny addition of the HWY material as context-within-context, the intense editing without showiness, sound mixing , Johnny Depp’s subtle phrasing and solid narration all fuse into one of the great films about music and the crazy, driven people who have no choice but to create it. Pondering the movie later I realized what guts it took for Ray, Robbie and John even to get on a stage with Jim. Only the best and most committed musicians could have made that work. When You’re Strange viscerally plugs into that tremulous period when The Doors represented the furthest edge to which one might aspire without actually getting arrested. I’ve alerted my associates at Warner Music Group about the June 30th screening in New York. I’ve told them this is a “must see” music movie. Jac

~Johnny Not Sure About Gilliam's Don Quixote~

At The Public Enemies press day in Beverly Hills Johnny was asked if Gilliam had approached him about coming back to Don Quixote. Johnny said they've talked, but things don't look good.

"The thing with Quixote is that my dance card is pretty nutty for the next couple of years, so I'd hate to put him in a position to wait for me. That would be wrong," Depp says. As far as we know, that "dance card" he's talking about includes The Lone Ranger, Pirates of the Caribbean 4, and others projects like Sin City 3. But is that all that's holding him back? Depp adds that even if he could fit it in, he's not so sure he'd return.

"We went there and tried for something and whatever it was - the elements and whatever got up beneath us were there and were documented well in that film Lost in La Mancha. I don't know if it's right for me to go back there."

~Johnny Talks About Dark Shadow~

Steve Weintraub of Collider sat down with Johnn Depp in Los Angeles hea asked him at length about why he wanted to play the role of John Dillinger and what research he did. He also asked him about Dark Shadows a project our community has shown a lot of interest in and so here is what Johnny had to say.
‘Dark Shadows’ is happening. Tim is working on ‘Alice in Wonderland’ which is obviously quite a large piece of work there. So when Tim is done with ‘Alice’ and we get the script, which is very, very close, in order we’ll probably attack it next year. It’s exciting, very exciting. It’s like a lifelong dream for me. I loved the show when I was a kid. I was obsessed with Barnabas Collins. I have photographs of me holding Barnabas Collins posters when I was five or six. I’m very excited to do it.”

Johnny also talked about Pirates 4 johnny says “what we’re trying to do is just get a script in order and make sure it’s the right thing to do. If we can get a great script it’d be a ball.”

Finally he talked in length about Alice In Wonderland and Tim Burton. You can view the full article @ www.collinder.com

~Public Enemies ET Exclusive Interview With Johnny~

Final of Public Enemies Week ET Specials. Interviews with Johnny Depp, and Marion Cotillard.

During the Interview Johnny admitted that he does not know what Twitter is. So for all those people out there who may be wondering is Johnny On Twitter the answer is no.

~ET Scoop On Public Enemies~

Kevin Frazier got the scoop on the film about Chicago gangsters on top of a skyscraper in the heart of the Windy City with the film's daring cast! Johnny, Christian Bale and Marion Cotillard told all about 'Public Enemies' and their characters!
"I got a sneaking suspicion that he was a very lovable character," Johnny told Kevin of the complexity of playing John Dillinger. "His choice of occupation was, you know potentially questionable," Johnny admitted, however.
Christian, who plays Johnny's movie nemesis, said of Johnny's character: "People wanted Dillinger to get away with it, you know? The myth of him, is one that is a very charming myth."
'Public Enemies' pits Johnny's 1930s bank robber Dillinger against Christian as FBI agent Melvin Purvis. Marion comes along for the ride as Dillinger's girlfriend Billie Frechette, while Channing Tatum plays henchman Pretty Boy Floyd, and Billy Crudup leads the FBI as J. Edgar Hoover.

~Chicago Premiere Red Capret With Johnny~

Johnny Depp appears on the red carpet premiere of the film in Chicago, IL Tonight. Less than four miles from the Lincoln Park theater where the hunt for John Dillinger ended, a crowd of about 600 waited to get a glimpse of Johnny Depp -- who portrays the notorious bank robber in "Public Enemies."

Johnny posed for photographers, talked with reporters, then walked out to the street to greet waiting fans, signing autographs on anything he could reach. The film, directed by Michael Mann, opens to the public July 1. More Red Carpet pictures have been uploaded to Loudappeal.

~Public Enemies 2nd ET Excusive~

Second of Public Enemies Week ET Specials. Interviews with Johnny Depp, Marion Cotillard, Michael Mann & Christian Bale.

~ET Exclusive Interview With Johnny~

ET has an exclusive first look behind the scenes! Johnny plays gangster John Dillinger in the movie, but would he rob a bank in real life?

"I'd rob a bank with any of those guys if they wanted to. Tomorrow," Johnny jests about the 'Public Enemies' crew.

The era is the early 1930s, and Dillinger has become the first-ever public enemy No. 1 for robbing banks across the heartland.

"On some level there was a sort of a Robin Hood in John Dillinger and he used that," says Johnny. "Dillinger was extremely savvy for a guy who basically came up from nowhere. He knew that his love for the people and the people's love for him would work in his favor."

The FBI was hot on Dillinger's tail, and agent Melvin Purvis, played by Christian, must take him down.

"It's cops and robbers in essence," says Christian. "That was what was so entertaining about that era, of why it continues to be so fascinating -- the notion of what people could get away with at that time."

Christian adds that a large number of downtrodden people loved Dillinger because of "the extreme feeling of us and them, the haves and have-nots, the fat cats, the banks -- so many people were resentful and had had their lives ruined that hearing about a man who was actually taking it back for himself, they couldn't help but idolize him."

Of course Johnny, the man who turned an ordinary pirate into an cinematic icon based on Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards, has a unique take on Dillinger: "He didn't see himself as a criminal in a bad way; he went out there as a rock 'n' roll star. He spoke to [the people] and owned them. He was very, very charismatic. Every time he spoke, he made [Herbert] Hoover and his boys look like chimps."

Stay tuned to ET for more exclusives as 'Public Enemies' week continues!

~Michael Mann: Inside Scoop on 'Public Enemies'~

Director Michael Mann sat down with Patrick Goldstein of the LA Times to talk about Public Enemies nad Johnny Depp. Once Mann had a finished script, he went to Depp, having been a fan of his work, especially offbeat fare like "Libertine"
"Johnny is not afraid to take chances," says Mann. "I thought this was a character he could relate to internally, to mine the deeper currents within himself, the way he would if he were ever to play a musician. I wanted to see Johnny go inside this guy, to do something emotionally open and expressive."

When asked how he know he's in sync with an actor when they're preparing a film? "The more you do it, the more you know it when you know," Mann says. "When Russell Crowe came in for 'The Insider,' I thought it was going nowhere -- and suddenly we were reading a speech and after two lines -- wham! -- he was Jeffrey Wigand. It was all him." Mann had a similar moment of takeoff with Depp a few weeks before shooting began. "As he was reading, I started hearing the voice I heard in my head when I was writing the words. It was great."
For Mann, it's all about delivering the goods. not just to the studio but also the moviegoer. "When I set out to make a movie, part of the thrill is the level of commitment," he says. "I ain't playing, you bet. I don't leave things half-[done], saying, 'Well, that scene is good enough. We can move on.' That doesn't happen. The ambition -- and it's a sizable one -- is to make a movie that has a dramatic impact on people."

~Bruckheimer Update On Pirates & The Lone Ranger~

ComingSoon.net had a chance to catch up with Bruckheimer this week and asked him about the status of both The lone Ranger and Pirates 4 projects.

Bruckheimer said that for Disney, the priority is most definitely "Pirates." "It's a great franchise for them and for us, too," he said. "A beloved character and Johnny's really excited about coming back to Captain Jack. He certainly is interested in Tonto, but Disney's priority is to get 'Pirates' made first. You never know what's going to happen, but they would like it."

Bruckheimer shared that the original writers, Terry Rossio and Ted Elliot, were "writing 'Pirates' as we speak," and he said it was "funny" and a "whole new way of going" although he wouldn't share more than that.

Since Gore Verbinski recently announced that he may not direct a movie based on the video game BioShock, Bruckheimer was asked if there was a chance that Gore Verbinski might return for a fourth movie. "You never know," he admitted. "He created the franchise so we'd love to have him back, but it's kind of up to him."
