"I was telling Tim, I think this guy's poisoned an this is what makes him mad. Obviously that's where the term came from, "Mad as a Hatter", because they used a lot of mercury when they were making those beautiful beaver-pelt hats," says Depp, whose impish Hatter, with shock of orange hair and multiple personalities and accents, bears both the physical and mental consequences of mercury posioning. Depp further distorted his visage with green contact lenses, which he admits made it difficult to see on set. "You always get images in your head of what the guy should look like", he says. and for some reason I thought he should look like a lit match.
